What is a Fire Blanket?

A Fire Blanket is used to smother and suppress the flames of a small fire, starving it of Oxygen.  It is made of a fire retardant material and when properly used, is a barrier between the user and the fire.

Fire Blankets are commonly used in kitchens and in settings where a small fire is a possibility in a confined space where a Fire Extinguisher may not be practical.

Correct usage of a Fire Blanket starts with the packing of the blanket within the carrier.  The carrier will be fixed to a wall with access tabs.  When the tabs are pulled, the blanket will unfold in a way that protects the user.

Many times when checking the condition of blankets, attention is not paid to how they are repacked and they do not deploy correctly.  This could result in not only the fire not being extinguished, but can cause harm to the user.

Whilst there is Limited Service Life on Fire Blankets like other ESM assets, it is considered good practice to replace them after 10 years.

In some older commercial properties, the may be fire blankets with Asbestos woven into the fibres.  These need to be not only replaced, but disposed of responsibly.  YSS can do that for you.

When you engage Your Service Solutions to service your Fire Blanket, we ensure the packaging is correct for correct deployment in the case of an emergency.  We can also train you and your staff in how to correctly use this piece of safety equipment.
